Book Title: Wings of Hope
Author: Hillary E. Peak
Publisher: Createspace
Published Date: December 9th 2011
The letter said he was dying, that’s all Jules Weinstein knows when she leaves her life in San Francisco and moves to New York City to be with her father. She goes for the remarkable opportunity to really know her father. She never dreamed he had liberated a concentration camp, dealt cards to Bugsy Siegel or saved the life of a Black Panther. Wings of Hope is a road trip through the memories of a man making peace with his life. Little does she know that by getting to know her father, she will find herself. While her father struggles with whether his life was meaningful, Jules discovers that her father’s last gift to her is the ability to reach for her dreams. Her journey teacher her that “the goodbye” is sometimes the most heartbreakingly beautiful part of life.
GUEST POST BY HILLARY PEAK
TOP 3 EMBARRASSING MOMENTS
1. Yesterday, it was raining. This is only relevant because I made my outfit choice based on the fact that I could wear boots to avoid getting my feet wet. It was steamy and damp, so I put on a skirt splashed with red poppies with big black centers and a cap sleeve black tee. I wore knee high boots and hurried out to my job.
Mid-morning, I ran out to do an errand. Hopped onto the metro and blissfully rode three stops, playing Sudoku the whole way. When we arrived at my stop, I stepped out and made my way toward the escalator. Suddenly, I felt a tap on my shoulder. "Your skirt is ripped in the back," the woman mumbled feebly to me. Twisting my skirt around, I was horrified to learn that I'd been flashing my behind to people all day.
2. For the past decade or so, my sister-in-law has been dating the same guy. His name is Dominick. Two years ago, my daughter started at daycare. The one man working there's name is Donovan. Why am I telling you this? Because when I first met Donovan, I thought everyone was calling him "Dom" not "Don." And I associated this with Dominick because we all call him "Dom." So, Christmas comes and the family gets together. First words out of my mouth? "Hey Donovan!"
3. My husband and I recently bought bikes. When we got them home, my daughter was exhausted, so we figured we'd go on a bike ride the next day. We pull them out in the morning. Riding the bike is a huge struggle for me. I'm barely able to keep up, and it feels like I'm going straight up Mt. Everest. My husband is kind of laughing at me and making cracks about me saying I was in shape. By the end of the hour, I have to actually get off and walk my bike up the last hill. I hate the stupid bike and take it back to the shop. What do you suppose they say is wrong? I rode the entire thing on flat tires.

ReplyDeletecatherinelee100 at gmail dot com
Yes, it was. I then spent an hour alternating looking in stores for another skirt and thinking of some way to fix the skirt. (While it was turned to the side so that I was just flashing my thigh to the world.) In the end, I found a needle and thread and fixed it myself.
DeleteYAY for embarassing moments and recovering from idealism!
