Review & Giveaway: Undying by Valerie Grojean

Original Title: Undying
Series: Undying #1
Author: Valerie Grojean
Publisher: Createspace
Release Date: September 29th 2013
Source: From Xpresso Blog Tours
Genre: Paranormal, Young adult, Horror

This is a story of love . . . and zombies.

When eighteen-year-old college freshman Christian discovers his dormitory is crawling with the living dead, he knows he has a problem. But once he learns the whole country is overrun by the flesh-eating horde, he must race to protect what matters to him most.

Sixteen-year-old Iris, the girl he loves, is stranded eighty miles away, alone and completely unaware of the gruesome threat surrounding her.

Christian’s plan is to evade the zombies, drive the distance to rescue Iris, and get them both to his family farm—where there are guns, fuel, and everything else they’ll need to survive. His mission seems simple: Get the girl, get to the farm, and stay alive.

Things get complicated when Christian is forced to make an unthinkable choice between Iris and his family. Someone he loves must die, and he must decide.

REVIEW

Tomorrow is the day Christian is going to finally propose his love to Iris.  He goes to bed thinking of all the possibilities of Iris' reaction, just to be woken up by the loud shriek of the neighbour.  Before Christian comes to conclusion about what's going on, his roommate comes in.  He says that his blonde neighbour bit him and although Christian thinks it weird at first, soon everything is clear that people are infected through water, dies and gets up a zombie.  His first thought was to save Iris and his family.  And that's what he does.

The writing and world building are great.  The characters are relatable.  Even the zombie apocalypse is convincing.  There is very little romance thread going on.  But, this is a horror book and you can't expect any other thing much.

The horror and gore in this book is great.  It didn't scare me to my bones, but it sure made me fear the zombie apocalypse society and made me want to throw up at times.

If there is one thing I don't like about a novel, it's the repetitive storyline (exception to Jill Shalvis).  That's the major letdown of this novel.  I have read other zombie novels and there are very few that convinced me that the story is unique.   Then there is other thing - the ending.  Let's see I don't agree with this type of endings..

Other than these things, I liked this book and if you are into trying zombie novels, you can add this to your list.

Review + Giveaway: As the World Dies Untold Tales (Horror) by Rhiannon Frater

I am new to Rhiannon Frater.  But, I am new to "As the World Dies" series.  I have those books for a very long time, but I didn't read it yet.  These tales are a good reminder of what I am missing.

Original Title: As the World Dies Untold Tales
Series:  Volume 1
Author: Rhiannon Frater
Publisher: Createspace
Release Date: March 22nd 2012
Source: From Xpresso Blog Tours
Genre: Horror

This is full of zombie short stories all taking place in the same setting but at different places and for different characters.  And each story has its own way to make you yearn for more, and just when you think you need more, something so horrific happens, and you are terrified and want everything to stop, and that's when the next story starts and you sigh with relief still thinking about the previous story.

Rhiannon sure knows how to write and also knows how to terrify you.  Half of the time, I was wondering how can one person imagine all these gory details and put down in paper without being frightened herself.  But, maybe she is stronger than me.  Or maybe I love to be scared.   Well, whatever.  She is one of those authors who writing makes you hooked to your chair.

I will definitely update this review on more character details after I read the "As the World Dies" series.

Recommeded for zombie lovers!

5 STARS!

Review & Giveaway: Dead Living by Glenn Bullion

Living Dead is one of those books I wish to be a series.  But it seems like a stand alone.. :(

Original Title: Dead Living
Author: Glenn Bullion
Publisher: Permuted Press
Release Date: January 7th 2013
Source: From Xpresso book tours
Genre: Horror, Zombies
Buy: Amazon | Barnes&Noble

It didn’t take long for the world to die. And it didn’t take long, either, for the dead to rise.

Born on the day everything ended, a world filled with the walking dead is the only one that Aaron knows. Kept in seclusion, his family teaches  him the basics. How to read and write. How to survive.

Then Aaron makes a shocking discovery. The undead, who desire nothing but flesh, ignore him. It’s as if he’s invisible to them.

The survivors of the old suburb of Lexington call a high school their home. They live day to day, without any of the luxuries mankind used to enjoy. Samantha is a product of the new world. Alone, cold, looking out only for herself. She and the other residents of Lexington feel their hope dwindling. They need change. They need someone who can face the corpses. They need someone who can live in a city of the dead.

They need Aaron.

REVIEW

All of a sudden, people doesn't stay dead.  When they die, they come back.  They crave flesh of living humans.  And once they bite, the living become one of them too.  In between all these zombies, there are some survivors.  Aaron is one of them.  The exciting and scary thing is the dead leave him alone.  While he keeps this to himself and just survives, he saves Sam from the zombies and brings her to his place.  Learning that Sam lives with a small community of people, he goes there and starts his life again.  But, what is waiting to him back in Lexington High with Sam?  How is he going to get revenge for his family's death?

This novel took me by surprise.  I just loved the way the author has told the story.  It started right at the time of the crisis and before the hero was even born.  The birth of Aaron and his relationship with his family are refreshing in a tale full of horror.  Aaron is gentle, optimistic and an excellent leader.  He was brought out as one of those characters who you can't relate, because of his great characters, but would look up and feel some hope.  Sam is a survivor from the start.  So, she is the girl I can completely understand.  She is who she is - all selfish and alone, because of her world.  You can't be social in a society, where everyone dies any day and turn into something more sinister.

The revenge part, the surviving part, the hope part, the romance part (even if it is very small part) and the tragic parts are all amazing.  The writing is not the best, but the plot covers those negatives.

I loved the making of plot and characters so much that I just want to give this book full 5 stars.

But..

I wish there were more information.  This novel is all about what happens when dead arise again.  But, world can't become something like that all of a sudden.  There must be some root cause for all this.  Why the author doesn't even touch that part makes me disappointed somewhat.  Because I would love to know those things.

Still, this is a great book, for anyone who wishes for a zombie/horror novel.  Highly recommended!

Note: I love this cover.  It is the perfect remainder of Aaron and the world he lives in.

4-STAR Review: "Wanted: Dead or Undead" by Angela Scott

Original Title: WANTED: Dead or Undead
Series: The Zombie West Series #1
Author: Angela Scott
Publisher: Evolved Publishing
Release Date: March 18th 2012
Source: From "I.O. Book Tours"
Genre: Horror, Young-adult

Trace Monroe doesn’t believe in luck. He never has. But when a fiery-headed cowgirl saunters through the saloon doors, wielding shotguns and a know-how for killing the living dead, he believes he just may be the luckiest man alive.

Trace wants to join Red’s posse, but she prefers to work alone—less messy that way. In order to become her travelling companion, Trace has to agree to her terms: no names, no questions, and if he gets bit, he can’t beg for mercy when she severs his brain stem.

He agrees, knowing only that Red is the sharpest shooter he’s ever encountered. The fact she’s stunning hasn’t escaped his attention either.

What he doesn’t know, is that Red has a very good reason to be on top of her game. She not only has the answer for how they can all outlive the plague taking over the wild, wild west, she IS the answer.

REVIEW

Recently, I like to read zombie novels, more than fantasy (but, fantasy is still my favorite genre) and when this book came for review, I just accepted.  And I am glad I did.

Set in a post-apocalyptic zombie world, this novel focuses on a group of people, trying not to get infected and stay alive.  Red, the heroine of this novel, is tough, independent and no-nonsense type.  Trace is a guy, who starts following Red, after she kills a zombie in a tavern, when all other men failed to do so.  Trace also knows that Red has a bounty placed on her head and tries to get Red to the city and get his money.  Red, knowing nothing about Trace's intentions, just tries to get rid of him.  During their journey, there are so many survivors here and there, who got themselves attached to Red and Trace and before Red knows it, soon they are like a family.  But, Red has her own secrets...

Okay, I know what you think - zombies and cowboys?  (I can even see your eye roll..)  Because I just did that, when I heard that.  But, I really was surprised to see that this novel gives you a good reading time.  In fact, this is the first western novel that I review.

The plot is fast, original and well-developed and the writing is great.  The character development is good and I loved almost all the characters.  The trust, friendship and romance is all non-cheesy (and that's a good thing).  This is a different approach to regular zombie novels and that's really appreciated.  The romance part is tender and sweet.  Enjoyed this page turner!

My only complaint is this - I am not scared.  Yeah, there are some gruesome descriptions, but I am not sure, why I don't feel that I-love-being-scared-of-zombies thing.  Other than that, I liked this book and definitely would like to continue this series.

Overall, this book created a feeling of sunniness while reading, and that alone should be enough for me to recommend it.

Recommended for zombie western romance readers!

5-STAR Review & Giveaway: The Scourge by A.G. Henley

Original Title: The Scourge
Series: The Scourge #1
Author: A.G. Henley
Release Date: January 31st 2012
Source: From "Kismet Book Tours"
Genre: Young-adult, horror

Buy @ Amazon at just $0.99!

Seventeen-year-old Groundling, Fennel, is Sightless. She's never been able to see her lush forest home, but she knows its secrets. She knows how the shadows shift when she passes under a canopy of trees. She knows how to hide in the cool, damp caves when the Scourge comes. She knows how devious and arrogant the Groundlings' tree-dwelling neighbors, the Lofties, can be.

And she's always known this day would come—the day she faces the Scourge alone.

The Sightless, like Fenn, are mysteriously protected from the Scourge, the gruesome creatures roaming the forests, reeking of festering flesh and consuming anything—and anyone—living. A Sightless Groundling must brave the Scourge and bring fresh water to the people of the forest. Today, that task becomes Fenn's.

Fenn will have a Lofty Keeper, Peree, as her companion. Everyone knows the Lofties wouldn’t hesitate to shoot an arrow through the back of an unsuspecting Groundling like Fenn, but Peree seems different. A boy with warm, rough hands who smells like summer, he is surprisingly kind and thoughtful. Although Fenn knows his people are treacherous, she finds herself wanting to trust him.

As their forest community teeters on the brink of war, Fenn and Peree must learn to work together to survive the Scourge and ensure their people’s survival. But when Fenn uncovers a secret that shatters her truths, she’s forced to decide who and what to protect—her people, her growing love for Peree, or the elusive dream of lasting peace in the forest.

REVIEW

In this novel, A.G. Henley has created an amazing world with her imaginations.  After the apocalypse (The Fall), there are some survivors who live in a forest depending on a single water source.  They are divided into two communities, Groundlings (who live in caves) and Lofties (who live on tree tops).  As soon as a baby is born, fair coloured and light eyed babies are given to the Lofties to raise in their community, while dark coloured babies belong to Groundlings.  These two communities doesn't go well with each other.

Fennel, a Sightless 17-year old, is a Groundling and also the Water Bearer of the community - meaning she is the one who fetches water to both Groundlings and Lofties in their time of need.  This need comes when the flesh-eaters - Scourge are there in the area.  During this time, there will be a Loftie Keeper as a companion, who protect the Water Bearer from the Scourge with their skill in archery.  Fennel's Keeper is Peree, a Loftie who has crush on her since his childhood.  The novel starts with the arrival of Scourge and Fennel's first duty commences.

Fennel soon realizes that Lofties aren't so bad and she may even 'like' Peree.  When the Scourge doesn't leave for a long time, Fennel volunteers to find the legendary Hidden Waters, so that she can save her people.  Peree accompanies her, in spite of the fact that there will be a punishment to him if his community knows about this.  What happens next and what the duo finds is nothing the readers will expect.

Another book, another new world and another unforgettable read!  This is one of those amazing reads that is worth your every penny.  The series of twists in the plot will keep you awake for long hours during the night with the Kindle clutched tightly in your hand.  (I even thought of applying for sick leave in my office.)  The romance between Peree and Fenn is cute.  The terror and truth of the Scourge is delivered well.  The characters and world building are just "WOW"!  The author definitely knows how to write and more that that, she knows how to maintain the suspense and essence of the novel.

The small stories that Peree tells to Fennel are adorable and I started expecting the couple's next move every time.  Fennel is a strong heroine - never thought one could deliver a heroine who is blind as a Savior   Peree is strong and so romantic.  I started liking more of Peree's scenes that when Peree is not in many parts in the middle of the novel, I started fidgeting.  Beautifully written and well delivered!

Amazing YA post-apocalyptic page turner!  Loved every minute of it.

Highly recommended!

REVIEW

*** WARNING: This book is rated R. ***

Here is the synopsis again, because it explains well, about the major part of the story.

A chain of advertising agencies, a new breed of humans, and a fallen angel to worship... Andel Talistokov is known for his slick advertising agencies across the globe. He is a fallen angel that uses advertising as a weapon for Satan's work. His growing power emboldens him to break several of Hell's Commandments. Furious with his arrogance, Satan commands him to return to Hell after finding his own replacement. Yezidism, an ancient angel worshiping religion, quietly expands throughout the West. Armaros appears as a guest of honor during their ceremonies. He mates with young women to produce nephilim, a mixed race of humans and angels. They are alone and unprepared for their supernatural power. Joanna Easterhouse, a recovering drug addict, steps out of prison shortly after her mother's fatal accident. She and her sister, Kim, unravel their mother's secretive past. Intrigued, they learn their bloodline is part of a celestial legacy. Both worlds collide.

Andel just made me feel sick.  All the gruesome zombie-ish routines of eating humans and Andel's assistant, Marcus' past are enough to make most of us stop this book.  But, its like you just love to be afraid when seeing the horror movies.  I just continued and it became less horrific.  I still continued and something new came up.  I was still reading when I predicted the next move and I finished reading when I felt like its a good read.

There are usual paranormal references like nephilim, angels, etc.  Most of the paranormal fiction readers would have read many books about those - so no surprise there.  But, this is my first time reading a fallen angel acting like a vampire cum zombie - I think the author thought this might add some terror to the reader's experience.  And it did to me, at the start.

There are some minor flaws in the novel.  When starting a new chapter, it takes some time to know what the author is narrating about.  Also, the book had some typos.

This book was predictable at many places, but some areas like Toby's character (you will have to read it to know) was good.  I enjoyed the read and that's all that mattered in the end.

Before I give a rating to this novel, I will admit that I have not read many horror and zombie novels, so this is not with my comparison with other horror novels.  But, as for me, I enjoyed reading it and I give it 3.5 stars.

REVIEW

"G"ripping!  Well, this is one of those first times for me, with the crime and horror novel combination.  And it pretty much had thrown me out of my shell.  From the start to the end, this novel had my undivided attention..and to that, both the writing and plot are the main reasons.  It's not only scary, but also a information mine.

"E"ngaging plot!  Hendrix Harrison (like his name! :)) is a journalist working for "Strange Phenomena", who is searching for some new article.  He stumbles upon ghost sightings in some places and tries to get more information on that.  But, what he doesn't know is that he was in danger of exposing an influential drug company of its invention gone wrong..wrong, in the sense, so so badly.  Sarah Wallace, a young and sexy forensic entomologist, finds that one of her dead bodies, donated to science, is missing.  Police is involved. Her forensic research on the body was so wrong..she gets aware of the fact that this is no normal test.

"N"o-nonsense hero and heroine!  Both Hendrix and Sarah's characters are portrayed in a great way, although in different fields.  They are both brave and great in their own jobs.  Hendrix relationship with his friends were as good as Sarah's relationship with her students.  Its both two different fields - journalism and science.  But, when Sarah stood up to solve the case against her management's decision, it showed her confidence (of course, she got thrown out from her job after that, but that's beside the point, right? :)) in her area of expertise.  And Hendrix was hunted for murder, thrown out of job and threatened, and still he tries to solve the mystery.  There is a reason these characters will be adored by the readers.

"E"ffective new area - Forensic science!  I am not interested in medicine, but I have seen National Geographic Channel, and I was so much interested in seeing what these people do.  So, when Sarah Wallace started saying about some of the facts and suspicions, it was so entertaining that I felt like I am seeing the channel.  Its a difficult area, what with knowing about multiple fields with excellence in all of them. The readers can definitely know much about their life here.

"R"iveting Research!  One thing I thought was amazing, so amazing, is the research done by the author for this book.  Journalism, Drugs, Medicine, Entomology, Technology - so many fields covered with great care and it worked out.  As the author himself is a journalist, I am not surprised by how well he brought out the character of Hendrix.  But, other fields - its just amazing that the author has done such a detailed research and presented in a gripping way to the readers.

"A"ction-packed!  Towards the middle of this book, this book gets filled with action.  Chasing the bad guys, finding the mystery and solving it, with policemen pointing their guns at their heads, is well more than what I wanted for action.

"T"hriller at its maximum!  You have got to trust me on this, because I was up until 1 o'clock last night to finish this book, and I was not the least bit tired until I had completed this book..it was that good.  I was clutching my Kindle so close, like if I get a closer look, I would find the mystery myself and may save many of them. :)

"I"nteresting and engrossing to the end!  I have made that point very clear, I suppose.

"O"pposite poles attract!  Hendrix is not good with technology, one who doesn't even know to tweet from his mobile.  Sarah is, you know, a geek.  When these two are attracted, we know what will happen - sparks fly.  I am not surprised by this..actually, it was comic when I thought how this will work out in the future for this couple.

"N"ot a zombie, its worse!  Yes, exactly my point..this book shows creatures worse than zombie.  I don't feel sorry for zombies..at least they can take care of themselves.  But, these creatures are like coma patients..dead, but alive.  I think enough of all the spoilers, you will have to read it to find out more.  Although one more thing - you see the cover?  I was sympathetic towards them, until I saw the cover again..well, its a horror novel, what do you expect?

"GENERATION": This is a perfect 5-star novel, that will amaze the readers at all ages.  But, as some adult scenes are involved, ages above 16 would find this novel to be great!

G + E + N + E + R + A + T + I + O + N = GENERATION
where each variables in this equation are explained above.

Review & Giveaway: The Outbreak (Zombie Love #1)

Original Title: The Outbreak
Series: Zombie Love #1
Author: Eric J. Sabolik
Publisher: Jericho Publishing
Published Date: August 8th 2011
Genre: Horror, Romance

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Zombie Love is the story of a widespread virus, in a way that has never been done before. As people lose loved ones, some decide that sometimes the people you love are the only ones worth fighting for. As factions form, and the world crumbles, people must choose sides. Help or destroy. When a virus is developed as the ultimate cure all by reversing death itself, the world is plunged into a crisis of faith, dedication, and love. In book one we meet Summer Strom, a normal high school teenager who is thrown cruelly into a set of circumstances that nobody should have to deal with. She has to fight back against everybody she knows as she battles for the only thing worth fighting for. Love.

MY REVIEW

*** This book is provided by the author for review purposes ***

What will you do, if the love of your life is now a zombie and don't even remember you?  Will you still like to be with him or kill him for the sake of others?  I know this is very difficult to ask and much more difficult to answer.  The author of Zombie Love has answered in his own way to these questions.

Daniel and Summer, two teens from the same neighborhood are attracted towards each other for a long time, but never came out with it directly.  But, at last when they shared their first kiss, Daniel was attacked by another zombie and now was turning himself into a zombie.  Summer's decision was the key to this novel's plot..so, I am not going to include that surprise (or is it shock?) for you.

The zombie here is not a fantasy character, got up from the dead by some black magic or something.  Its a virus, that was gone uncontrolled by a scientist.  Although I enjoyed some of the scenes in the book, and the overall thrill the book offered, I felt that the characters are not deep and well-developed to get involved in the book entirely.

Summer and Daniel's love was not shown to be so deep in the novel, to know whether Summer's decision is made of desperation or foolishness.  But overall, I enjoyed the book and I can understand Summer's desperation to protect Daniel.  But there is not much anyone can do for Summer or Daniel and towards the end of the book, I was really over the edge to know, how all of this will end.  Will there ever be a happy ending for Summer and Daniel?  I hope the next book in the series answers.

Fast-paced novel..recommended for not-so-mature zombie lovers!

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK COVER

There are many different views about this cover.  Some of my blogging friends said its cute, some said its scary and some creepy.  I think I have to go for creepy. :)  But, after reading the novel, I think instead of zombie holding the girl, it should be the other way around.  Because that's what the entire book is about.. - Summer holding on to her love, Daniel.
