Down, Boy

Anna Moder has just witnessed a shooting, seen her car pulverized, and rescued a wounded stranger only to discover he's really a werewolf. And by her recent standards, things are actually looking up. Lycanthropes don't faze Anna. Doctoring a wolf pack outside Grundy, Alaska, is the closest thing to home life she's known in years. But hitching a ride to Anchorage with long-absent pack member Caleb Graham that's a risk. Part of her itches to whack his nose with a newspaper. The rest is trying unsuccessfully to keep her own paws off every delicious inch of him.

The problem is, Caleb employs his lupine tracking abilities as a notquite-legal bounty hunter, and Anna is suspicious of both him and his profession. On the run from her past, with old problems closing in, she'd like to stay far, far away from anybody with connections to the law. Caleb, however, seems determined to keep her close. Are his intentions noble, or is he working a more predatory angle?

Anna's been dreaming of returning to a semi-normal life, but now she's experiencing a strange new urge . . . to join Caleb in running with the wolves.

REVIEW

Anna Moder is on the run from her psychotic ex-husband and even left the job as the pack doctor, where she felt like home, in the fear of happening something to the pack because of her ex.  Somehow, she finds herself in front of a bullet wounded guy and her destroyed car.  In spite of her brain telling her to run away, her instincts make her to help the wounded man - only to find that she has ended up with a warewolf.  Caleb, the said warewolf, belongs to Maggie's pack, where Anna had worked.  Although Anna had not seen him before, she had heard a lot about him.  Now, she is thinking of a way to try to run again..only that she can't seem to do just that.  Caleb reminds her of home, makes her feel safe and loved.  But, there are huge secrets on both ends and not to mention psychotic ex on the loose..

Anna and Caleb were both great characters.  Anna's sarcasm and Caleb's cute gentlemanly demeanor are the highlights.  Caleb's warewolf behavior made me smile more than once.  The couple sure have their issues, but with the mental stress and backgrounds, it's not exaggerated.  Just when Anna has let her guard down and started to trust Caleb, the author lays the biggest bomb of all and everything started to crumble again.  Although I know Molly Harper would definitely give the couple their deserved HEA, I was worried after that particular plot twist..

The older characters, Cooper, Mo, Maggie and Nick are so nice to see them.  Cooper's extended protective instincts to his daughter, Eva, is so delightful.  And Maggie's mood shifts make me want to hug her and smile, although she would kick me if I do so much as touch her.

Molly Harper's writing is great as always.  She made me laugh, sigh, terrified, relieved and everything else so easily.

"No!" I said. "Give us the ring."  OK, now I definitely felt like Gollum.  And if she kept batting at my face with those acrylic nails, I was going to look like him.

This book, although a part of the series, can be read as stand alone.  And this entire series is highly recommended for anyone who want a fun paranormal romance read.

A fast, fun read with all the right elements to a successful plot!

7-POINTER Review: Waterfell by Amalie Howard

7-Pointer Review is my version of a quick review in just about 7 points, a conclusion and my feeling at the end of my read with a picture.  I have so many books to review that I have already read and so much more books to read.  So, I am sorry for making some reviews short (which will be monthly once or twice).  But, don't worry, I will try to get it all out.

Original Title: Waterfell

Blending in is her best weapon—until her father's betrayer confronts Nerissa and challenges her to a battle to the death on Nerissa's upcoming birthday—the day she comes of age.

Amid danger and the heartbreak of her missing mother, falling for a human boy is the last thing Nerissa should do. Is Lo the linchpin that might win Nerissa back her crown? Or will this mortal boy become the weakness that destroys her?

REVIEW

1. Selfish protoganist, Nerissa, with a huge (like really really huge) responsibility (DISLIKE)
2. Charming and mysterious boyfriend, Lo
3. Amazing friendship and loyalty (LOVE LOVE LOVE Jenna)
4. Evil queen trying to kill everyone (who also has a whole round of mystery to herself)
5. Brilliant world-building (would have loved to know more about Aquarathi) and original plot (LOVE)
6. So many mysteries and twists in the plot keep you hooked
8. Refreshing, engaging, action-packed wild ride with potential to a great series.

The originiality in the plot is the strong point here.  More than anything, I give it to all the characters (other than Rissa) for such an incredible ride.  And as there is still a lot of mystery to solve, I will definitely be continue reading the series.

5 STAR Review + Giveaway: Atone (A Fairytale Trilogy) by Jessica Grey

Again, I am saying - if you write fairy tale retellings, just let me know.  I am never going to back down on this genre.  But, please always do some justice to the original plot.. just like this novel.

Original Title: Atone: A Fairytale
Series: A Fairytale Trilogy #2
Author: Jessica Grey
Publisher:  Tall House Books
Release Date: July 8th, 2013
Source: From Xpresso Book Tours
Genre: Fairy tale retellings, Fantasy, Young adult, Paranormal Romance

Becca Ward knows that magic is real...

Two years ago not only had she and her best friend Alex found a real-life Sleeping Beauty in the middle of Los Angeles, they also discovered that they were powerful in their own right. They’ve managed to keep both their fae powers and their friend Lilia’s identity as a medieval princess a secret and live a normal life. Now their normalcy is threatened by the return of their former advisor at the Gem and Mineral Museum—and Becca’s least favorite person, Nicholas Hunt.

...and she’s about to find out that more than one fairy tale is true.

Nicholas has been obsessed with proving Lilia’s identity and the existence of magic. While working on an archeology dig he discovered an ancient fae artifact—a mirror that is imbued with a powerful protection spell that twists his obsession, and his body, until he is more beast than man. In order to protect her friends, Becca is forced to help him, and she is surprised to find that in spite of his outward appearance, Nicholas is no longer the beast she remembers. Will she let herself be the beauty that breaks the curse, or will she let her prejudice against him stop her from discovering true love?

REVIEW

Becca Ward has some 'metal' powers in her.  Her best friends, Alex and Lilia, are also magical.  When Nicholas poses a threat to their identity, Becca tries to find him and do what is necessary to keep him silent. This is going to be a problem, because Becca has never liked Nicholas.  And helping him is going to be difficult.

Nicholas Hunt, an archeologist obsessed with magic, comes across a magical mirror.  The spell in the mirror changes him to a Beast.  Even more unexpected is the girl who comes to help him, with whom he has always had a hostile relationship.  But, she is the one that brings out the man inside all his Beastly appearance.

The plot is not original (being a retelling and all), but it's a refreshing, cool take on the original plot.

The characters and the world building are amazing.  Each character is different and they stand alone independently.  Even the minor's characters, like Becca's cousin, are adorable and all of them keeps reminding me of some person that I meet in real life.  The understanding between Becca and her friends is something every person would crave for.  As I said, the characterization is great and memorable.

Having not read the first book in the series, there were some struggles initially to catch up with the plot, but soon Jessica brought out some scenes to explain briefly about the past happenings.

Becca is a strong protagonist and someone who has her own faults and still enjoys her life.  And Nicholas, although seems to be a jerk previously, changes drastically in his beast form.

The hostility, friendship and romance between Becca and Nicholas was so charming.  At least now I know how Beauty and Beast got close together emotionally.  When I started reading this, I seriously didn't expect this book to rock, but oh boy, it totally did.

And did I mention the climax?  Well, I love you Jessica!  That was one of the best HEA I have read.  I have always thought that Belle and Beauty's kiss at the end of Disney movie is the best kiss scene ever.  I was so happy that I was able to feel some of that magic here.

Loved loved loved!  Jessica --- Here you have earned another fan for you!  One of the best "Beauty and the Beast" retellings and one of my favorite reads this year!  And Jessica, thanks for not ruining my love for the original version and making me fall in love with fairy tales some more.

Do I even have to recommend this to you after all this?  Go on, read this already.

Review: Morning Star (Equinox #1) by Desiree Finkbeiner

"Morning Star" is another novel on my currently-reading list for a long long time.  But you know, this time I am not the only reason.  When the author was kind enough to send me the audio copy of this book, I started listening to it immediately.  But, you know, my hubby lost my precious earphones and then my mom and mother-in-law started taking matters out of control, I lost touch with books..well, almost.  Now that everything is back to normal or as normal as it can be, let me start with the review.

Original Title: Morning Star
Series: Equinox #1
Author: Desiree Finkbeiner
Publisher: Hydra Publications
Release Date: March 28th 2012
Source: Audio book from publisher and author
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Young adult

When a mysterious stranger interrupts Brianna’s mundane routine, her eyes are opened to the dark underbelly of reality… immortal rogues, ancient conspiracies, prophetic revelations, savage tribes, mammoth dragonflies…

She’s thrust into a race for her life when Kalen, a warrior from Ethos, discovers that she is harboring a secret… a secret that he’d give his life to protect.

There’s just one little problem… they are tempted by a forbidden romance, which threatens to compromise a divinely appointed mission. They are faced with a choice… love eternal, or the end of the world…

REVIEW

Brianna is your typical teen, going to college and having fun with her friends and family.  But, all of a sudden, huge dragonflies are following her and then there was a small accident, which she gets magically healed so soon.  Then she meets Kalen.

Kalen is a warrior from another place, Ethos, who comes in search of something so important to his world.  But his searches lead him to Brianna.  Although he starts liking Brianna, due to his promises, he can't love her.  So, what is going to happen to this supernatural couple?  Did Kalen save Brianna from whatever enemies he have?  Did Kalen get what he is searching for?

First of all, this story is something different.  Huge magical dragonflies; cute hero controlling those dragonflies to track the enemies; innocent girl caught stuck in some age old war; bad people chasing our boy and girl; the fairy tale couple tries to 'not' love each other - well, everything is good.  I know when I put like this, it sounds simple, but believe me, this story is something I have not read before.  The world building is great and so is the character building.  I absolutely enjoyed the overall plot of the novel.

And the audio quality was good as well.  Jessica did an excellent job in bringing the characters' voices and emotions.  My audio rating for this novel is 4 out of 5.

So, what not to like?  The story is dragging at many places during the first half of the novel.  I lost interest at those places, but just kept going.  Of course, it became better..but those places can make some of the readers make it as DNF read.

Some suggestions: The cover could be changed; I, for one, pick up books mainly based on the cover, and I don't fully approve of this.  Actually, I have mixed feelings about this cover..one time I like it, and the next I don't.  Then the dragging parts in the novel could be cut down; because I don't want to lose the excitement of the story to be lost during those parts.

However, even with some of its faults, I enjoyed the novel, and as I usually say, that's what matters in reading.

Would love to read the next installment to know more!

3.5 STARS!

REVIEW

At recent times, BDB series has lost its shine to me.  I didn't even try to read BDB #9 and #10.  And then I want to see how Qhuinn and Blay ends up and had gone and bought it.  Well, I am so happy that I am not disappointed and I remembered how all this BDB craze started.  It's all the love for and between the boys that made me stick on to them so much.

This installment is just so good and it has sub-plots that I don't understand (well, I skipped two books, what do I expect..) in the beginning.  But towards the middle, I am so into the story and was so looking forward to the story of the BDB boys than the other new teams.

Another must-read from Ms.Ward!

Next one is about Wrath..and I am not going to miss it for the world.

REVIEW

If you search for reviews about this book, almost all the reviews will contains words like "dark" and "beautiful".  And this book is exactly those things and more!

Although this book was highly hyped about, I started this book with less expectations.  Oh my god, this book is awe-tastic.  This is how a book must be written.  It did perfect justice to its genre.  I kept moving through the pages fast and steady.  The characters and plot are just great.  I liked everything about the book.

Though I was expecting this ending, it is still heartbreaking..

MUST READ and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!  But, if you want some light read or fun book, please don't pick this up.

Now to you awesome readers, I know many of you would have already read this.  If so, how do you feel about them?  And if you haven't read, do you wish to pick them up?

5 STAR ARC Review : Pretty When They Collide (Pretty When She Dies 0.5) by Rhinnon Frater

Although I have been following Rhiannon Frater's literary works for months now, but this is the first opportunity I got to read her book and after reading this, I am definitely NOT going to stop it at this.

Series: Pretty When She Dies 0.5
Author: Rhiannon Frater
Release Date: March 13th 2013
Source: Review copy from the author
Genre: Paranormal

An exciting new novella set in the world of Pretty When She Dies...

Cassandra is a dhamphir-the offspring of a vampire and mortal woman-and a thief of occult relics.

Aimee is a full-blood witch that is bound to a powerful vampire who traffics in the slavery of supernatural beings.

Both are powerful, lonely, and trapped in the dangerous world of the vampires.

When Cassandra steals a relic from Aimee’s vampire master, he targets her as his next acquisition. What he doesn’t realize is that a chance encounter between Cassandra and Aimee ignited a spark between them that they cannot deny.

To survive, the women must find a way to band together and fight against the ruthless evil that conspires to enslave them forever.

REVIEW

Cassandra is a dhamphir - vampire father and human mother - who works as a thief stealing important relics using her powers.  Killing vampires on the go, is just another advantage of her work.  During one such jobs, she comes in contact (accidental bump) with a very rare full-blooded witch and immediately magic flows between the two, along with the desire.  Cass doesn't know that that her current job - the relic that she stole belongs to this witch's vampire master, Frank.

Aimee is a full-blooded witch, who is enslaved by the blood bond of a vampire, Frank.  Aimee can't work against Frank because of their bond, even though she is much more powerful than him.  When she accidentally collides with a beautiful woman, she knows that she is a dhamphir.  And her blood can break the bond between Frank and her.  But that is not the only reason Aimee wants to see that woman  again.  She felt some hot desire that she never felt before when she touched her.  So, when Frank plans to capture Cassandra, Aimee contacts her in dream and asks her to come, explaining the situation.

Is Aimee's request enough for Cass to risk her own life?  Even if Cass helps by going into a trap knowingly, will Aimee get rid of her vampire 'monster' master, who is also planning to collect Cass to add to his possessions?

As I said before, this is my first Rhiannon's novel, although I was trying to read her books like months ago.  I have even bought her books and kept.  But, as always my life has been very busy lately and now, I found my reading time somehow.

The two main characters, Cass and Aimee, will entrance the readers to never stop reading.  Their attitude and powers made me want to learn more about them.  I think I have to start reading other books soon.  Frank is just pure evil.  I just hate that guy for the way he behaved towards Aimee.  Rhiannon has created the villain more horrible that we would want to hurt him ourselves.  That's a real success to a character.

About the writing, the flow is smooth, the pace is fast and the narration is awesome!  One would be happy for Aimee, enjoy the toughness in Cassandra and feel the need to kick Frank.  The action scenes were brought out so well, that I was clutching my Kindle so hard and reading with my face so near to the Kindle, as if I am going to miss something if I keep my Kindle in some distance from my eyes.

Favorite character:  Cass' mother.  With her forgetfulness and love towards Cass, she made me feel the love that she felt in me too.  Such characters are very hard NOT to love.

Favorite scene:  The action scene in the climax scene.  Excellent narration!

This book is an action-filled short novella from "Pretty when she Dies" series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Recommended for fans of fantasy and paranormal romance readers!

ARC Review: Of Blood and Bone (The Minaldi Series #1)

Original Title: Of Blood and Bone
Series: The Minaldi Series #1

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Of Blood and Bone (The Minaldi Legacy, #1)

As a little boy, Luca Minaldi was told he was a monster.
As an adult, he knows it is true.

He lives in Malta, a fairytale-like place filled with sunshine and sea, beauty and secrets. And Luca’s darkest of secrets is the best kept of them all.

Eva Talbot arrives in Malta for the summer to finish up her doctoral dissertation. When she meets Luca, a mysterious and handsome shipping tycoon, there is an instant attraction, a disturbing and beautiful energy that she has never felt before. But she senses the darkness that lives within him.

Eva is hired to care for his mother, who suffers from dementia, but it is Luca who Eva will eventually risk everything to save. Her life becomes a swirling chaos of darkness and romance, of secrets and mystery. And the question that emerges will become the most important answer of all.

Can she save Luca from the darkness that plagues him without losing herself?

The answer is a matter of life or death.

REVIEW

Evangeline (Eva) is an American psychiatrist, who travels to Malta to finish her dissertation over the summer.  On her first day, Eva meets Luca Minaldi, who 'protects' her from a spider..and so begins the romantic interlude.  In this new place, people are friendly and accepting, except there are strange murders happening all over the place.  While her attraction towards Luca increases over time, she also learns that this rich, gorgeous and mysterious male has some dark secrets.

This felt like a modern day version of "Beauty and the Beast" with more suspense.  I liked the author's writing in general, and her way of maintaining the thrill.

I loved the way the author has brought out certain feelings, differently through her writing.

"Ever since my father died, since he committed suicide, my mother has not been well. Not that she was ever well to begin with. Not truly. But she is worse now than she has ever been. Now, to put it less than eloquently, she is fucking insane."

"And it’s not that I don’t think he’s attractive. Clearly, he is attractive. And he’s charming and sweet. And I like him. But when I think of him, I think of a golden retriever. Happy, loyal, not too deep. I think I need a man with substance."

Although I like this new world and new characters, the main characters doesn't connect deep with me, as much as the world did.  This new world with friendly atmosphere is sweet.  The main strengths of this novel are its story and the thrill.  There is a cliffhanger in the end and you are going to buy the next one to know what lies next.

"so I tell him that" - This is the statement that occurs some 100 times or so, in this book.. and its becoming annoying at times.  For example, "I find myself sleepy, so I tell him that."  I think I prefer direct dialogues.

There are many times, that I thought this book is way too predictable (maybe the blurb says it all???), but still I enjoyed this novel and that's all that matters in the end..right?  So, yes!  There are some flaws, but who cares.  Enjoying the novel during your reading time is more important.

REVIEW

*** Thanks to HarlequinTEEN for providing an ARC of this novel. ***

When I first heard that this is an intermediate novel, I was like "Do we really need this?  Why can't they just get on with the story?"  Okay, I admit that I was so wrong.  I absolutely loved this and if you are asking whether this novel is necessary for the story, my answer is no, but this helped me understand about other characters in "Goddess Test" series.  And I am really glad that I read it.

5 AMAZING short stories combined as one and at last, lead to the "Goddess Test" series.  The author is an amazing writer.  As these are short stories, I don't want to spoil the fun by discussing the plot, but I will say few things just to tempt you.. :)

1.  Hera is not totally evil.  Yep, it seems to me like she is some sort of psycho, but this novel shows her as some-love-sick-puppy.
2.  Ava, who always seemed so happy and care-free in other novels, had her bad times, because of her commitment issues (just like her dad).  You must read this to know how Ava found a guy, who seem to love her, no matter who she spends her time with.
3.  Persephone, who was portrayed to have betrayed Henry in the series, is not at fault.  (Actually, I hated Persephone in the first two series because of leaving Henry and all that, but I think I was wrong.)
4.  James, who we all know as some care-free guy, has his very bad times and that MAY involve Persephone and Ava. ;-)
5.  At last, you have Henry's story of how he first sees Kate.  We also learn about some of the girls, who died before Kate took the Goddess Test.  Throughout this novel, this is what I what to know..so when are you going to read?

As I said, this novel changed my view of the characters in this series.  And I really really love that the author has delivered it so beautifully, that I don't feel like she is ruining the myth.  Thanks Aimee, I am glad I read this.

I read this book a long time ago - like one month back.  And the feeling, that I got while reading this novel, still stays fresh in my mind.  That's the main reason, I gave this novel -- 5 stars!

Interesting take on Greek mythology - AGAIN!

Review & Giveaway: The Catalyst (Preternaturals #3) by Zoe Winters

Original Title: The Catalyst
Series: Preternaturals #3
Author: Zoe Winters
Publisher: Incubooks
Release Date: June 6th 2012
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Links: Refer here

It started with one lost, shivering pup; it may end in a war...

Panthers don’t do responsibility. They don’t do long-term relationships. They definitely don’t raise kids. But when Z discovers a young wolf in the forest, he takes him in, unaware of the powerful beings hunting the pup.

Fiona is a witch who can’t leave her house; the birds have told her something bad will happen. The mailbox is as far as she’ll go, but even that may provide more danger than she’s bargained for. When a wolf pup stumbles into her garden, her safe, wrapped-up world heads for a free fall.

But along with danger, the pup brings a chance at love—a chance an agoraphobic witch and a bachelor panther shifter aren’t likely to find on their own.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: The Catalyst is an ensemble book that also features Jane and Cole (from Blood Lust) and Cain (from Blood Lust and Save My Soul)

REVIEW

It started with a witch, Fiona, who have agorophobia.  She never leaves steps out of her house due to this fear and is afraid to learn magic, fearing that it may have leave some trail.  The only natural magical ability she possesses is to speak with animals and know their feelings.  When she sees a werewolf puppy, looking lost, in her garden, she goes and picks it up and feeds him, in spite of her fear.  All of a sudden, a were-panther suddenly breaks through her window and tries to hurt her.  When she reads the panther's mind, she understands that he thinks that she is trying to harm the pup.  She manages to convey the message that she is just feeding a lost pup.  The were-panther introduces himself as Z, and asks her help in taking care of the pup.  When she refuses, he kidnaps her and takes her to his cave.  All hell breaks lose, when Fiona loses that pup.

How are they going to find the pup? Will Fiona ever get over her fears and get on with life?  Is Z finally going to be ready to love someone and be committed to her?  How will Z and Fiona convince the pup's parents, when they come for him?

First, I loved the males in this novel - just WOW.  Second, the story is fast paced.  Third, I loved to read about other preternaturals (paranormals), having not read the first two books yet.  Fourth, I love her writing..this is my second book from Zoe and I loved her way of writing in both the books.

Negatives: Fiona - I DON'T like that girl.  She is so whiny and always keeps crying.  I love my heroines to be strong or at the least get strong in their journey of life.  Nope, this girl keeps crying from start to finish.  If she hadn't possessed that one natural magic of speaking with animals, there is nothing interesting about her.  Weak!

But, the other female, the author bring in (don't want to break that suspense for you), well, she is good.  Tough and kind - I could like that combination.  Except for Fiona, I loved all the other characters.  The pup, Cain, Cole and other pack members were just so apt for the novel.  The plot was not strong, but if you just want some action and drama in the novel, you will love it.

Publisher: Delacorte Books
Release Date: June 12th 2012
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

The lore of mermaids and mermen is real. Just wait until you meet Calder White in this addictive debut novel that is destined to make a splash!

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters must prey on humans and absorb their positive energy. Usually they select their victims at random, but this time around the underwater clan chooses its target for a reason: revenge. They want to kill Jason Hancock, the man they blame for their mother's death.

It's going to take the whole White family to lure the aquaphobic Hancock onto the water. Calder's job is to gain Hancock's trust by getting close to his family. Relying on his irresistible good looks and charm, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter Lily. Easy enough, but Calder screws everything up by falling in love—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined, and just as the mermaids threaten to take matters into their own hands, forcing Calder to choose between family and the girl he loves. One thing's for sure, whatever Calder decides, the outcome won't be pretty.

Genre: Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

It takes a monster to hunt one, and for Raine McCord, forged in the maelstrom of magic and science, she’s the one for the job. In a world where the supernatural live in a shadowy existence with the mundane, a series of disappearances and deaths threatens the secrecy of her kind and indicates someone knows the monsters are alive and kicking. Partnering up with the sexy and tantalizing Gavin Durand proves to be a challenge as dangerous as the prey she hunts.
When the trail points back to the foundation which warped Raine’s magic as a child, her torturous past raises its ugly head. Gavin and Raine sift through a maze of lies, murder and betrayal to discover not only each other, but the emerging threat to them and the entire magical community.

EXCERPT

“You’re going to have to move fast if you want to save your boyfriend, Raine.” It took a second for the words to penetrate through the static.

“Who are you?”

“Let’s just say you and I are kin of sorts.” The voice was a vibrating growl.

“Strange, I don’t remember attending a family reunion recently.” Her heart rate kicked up and static whispered across the line even as she struggled to stay calm.

The static cleared. “Perhaps because you have no family left.”

Her blood froze at the words. “What do you want?” Her own voice came out cold, merciless.

“Ah, ah ah,” the voice chided. “No need to get so upset, cher. I just wanted to let you know if you want lover boy to make it out sane, you best starting moving on Dr. Lawson’s little lab.”

“What lab?” she bit out.

There was a huge elaborate sigh. “I’m so disappointed at how slow y’all move. Hasn’t your boss found lover boy’s car yet?” The gruff voice didn’t wait for answer. “Check the glove compartment. I’m sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.”

Her mind raced furiously. “How do I know this isn’t just another little trap?”

The growl rumbled. “You don’t, but since you and I know exactly what’s happening to lover boy, I have a feeling it won’t matter. That Chet character, he was getting way too close, but this one they’re keeping alive for now. He shows promise.” A guttural scream cut through the airwaves, and she felt her breath stop.

REVIEW

Raine is a Wraith, who has a terrible past life and works to kill the bad boys of the Kyn (supernatural beings) society.  While she fights her own nightmares and prefers to live alone in her mental fortress, she was ordered by her boss to partner for her next case with Gavin, a very attractive, mysterious Kyn.  Raine is trying hard to resist the charm boy, but you know how fate plays.  Raine has to come clean with her past, face the truth and win the love of Gavin.  But the case she is working with Gavin, is hitting pretty close to home.  How can she bring the guilty person to justice, when she herself is guilty of so many crimes?

Shadow's Edge is a fantasy read with a complex plot and characters.  Just when you think the plot leads to something, the author brings in another surprise that throws us off.  For a debut, this book is great.  The romance, mystery and fantasy were all splattered across the pages in right amounts at right places.

The only problem is that there is no attraction between me and the novel.  Maybe this thing is only for me..if you enjoy the book in a different way, don't forget to inform me.  I was thrilled to see the plot stretching before me and had fun at all the sexual tension between the couple.

Kyn Kronicles will surely become a new series, that I would wait for.

3.5 stars!

ARC Review: The Shapeshifter's Secret by Heather Ostler

Original Title: The Shapeshifter's Secret
Author: Heather Ostler
Publisher: Cedar Fort
Published Date: June 12th 2012
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

Julia is finally discovering what–not who–she is.
Like any sixteen-year-old, Julia's used to dealing with problems. From her overprotective father to her absent mother to a teacher who definitely has it in for her. But everything changes when Julia's reactions become oddly vicious and angry---more animal than human. This action-packed adventure has it all: humor, romance, and a plot that will keep you guessing to the very last page.

REVIEW

Julia is sixteen and have some teen problems like a terrible teacher, over-protective father and anger management issues.  But, she didn't expect to know that she was a warecat (also called a shapeshifter) and royalty in a secret city.  When she finally learns her 'gifts', she was taken back to the castle, where she attends school for kids, who were all with some abilities.  She also deals with some relationship issues - ah, men!

Nice plot!  Have you seen "Sky High" movie?  If you like that, you will like this.  I felt some similarities between this novel and that movie..and those were really good ones.  The author has done an amazing job thinking about this new world and new subplots.

Love the cover, huh?  Well, me too!  The author must have got an amazing designer to bring out Julia with her warecat abilities in the face.  Great design!

My only complaint is that I cannot attach myself to any of the characters.  They felt distant.  If you don't have problem with those things, then probably you would give this book full 5 stars.  But, connecting with characters is a much required parameter for a book, at least according to me.  And then the protagonist, Julia, is not someone I adore..actually, I like her friend better than her.

With some of these problems, this book may not be liked by all.  So, just think..could you just pick up with the plot and not care about connecting with characters?  If yes, then just pick up the book!  You will definitely love it.

For a debut, this is really such a good effort!

So, this is my rating:  3.5 STARS!

Væmpires—former vampires who mutated into warm-blooded creatures with an insatiable hunger for cold blood—have launched coordinated attacks across the globe, with three goals: the eradication of humanity, the enslavement of vampires, and the ascension of væmpires as the dominant species on the planet.

The vampire and human leaders are killed. Cassandra is missing. Daniel is the acting king. Desperate to find the princess, Daniel and his friends fight their way across the besieged city. With the hopes of the free world resting on the shoulders of four vampire teenagers, væmpires unleash their secret weapons: a new breed of væmpire that is far deadlier than any ever seen before.

What can four teens do against an enemy that can shape-shift, fly, and walk through walls?

REVIEW

Its really not fair to end a novel with such a cliffhanger..its "Catching Fire" all over again.  I was so angry with Suzanne Collins, when she finished it like that.  Now, I am angry with Thomas Winship too.

The plot was set in a futuristic world.  Humans mutated to vampires and there started a war of power called H-V War, meaning Human-Vampire War.  This war was also called as The Great Devastation or World War III.  The After Devastation (AD) years of H-V War ended up with the some peace makings and renaming of Earth as Tarados - Earth Two and the vampires becoming the leaders.

For years, the humans and vampires were living peacefully helping one another, although vampires ruled.  The vampires were given synthetic blood to quench their thirst, so that they doesn't harm anyone.  Then the mutation hit - and the Væmpires came along.  These new species thirsted for vampire blood.

The story begins with how these Væmpires start a war destroying all humans and vampires along the way, draining the blood from vampires.  Some of the Væmpires also have some special powers, like flying, reading the minds, killing with a touch, etc.  So, one can imagine how cruel the war will be.  The King, Queen and most of the royalty is also killed.  But, Princess Cassandra, who is celebrating her sixteenth birthday on that day escapes somehow.  So is Daniel, Cassandra's boyfriend and the son of the leader of the Royal Guard, and now is the acting King until Cassandra is coronated.  Daniel's friends, Ray and Linq, also escapes the cruel Væmpires, fighting along the way.

These four friends do not know whether the other one is alive or dead and makes their way hoping to win the war.  With their parents killed, these teenager have to win the war, save the remaining people and above all, stay alive in the process.

The plot was new and refreshing in the vampire genre.  The writing and story-telling are great.  This novel is all about war, so violence and blood dominates the plot than romance.  Taking responsibility and tough decisions is not an easy task even for heroes, but Daniel is great on that perspective.  Cassandra is brave, beautiful and intelligent.  The stories of Ray and Linq are not explained, so I expect them to be in the scene in the next book.   I really can't wait to read the next!

Well-written, face-paced and imaginative take on vampires!

A Cinderella who spends her nights as a wolf. A prince with a taste for blood.

No way will she risk exposing the beast at the prince’s ball, no matter how her two cousins try to persuade her. Even as she attempts to get on with her life, Cydney can’t forget the boy she loved three summers ago — or what she did to him after losing control.

Turned into a vampire to save his life, the prince refuses to live up to his royal duties. He just wants to find the girl he loved and lost...the werewolf girl who bit him. But his father, the king, commands him to attend a ball where he must choose a wife. Can he find his Cinderella before he's forced to marry another? He doesn’t even have her real name, much less a glass slipper.

REVIEW

Excellent, sweet and irresistable romantic fantasy!

Cydney meets a boy, Remy, while she visits her aunt's house.  They do not wish to share their identity, so they call themselves Cinderella and Jack.  In three summers that Cydney met him, they began to fall in love with each other.  That was the stage, when Cydney's werewolf father's gene became dormant.  When Cydney received her first kiss from Remy, due to excitement, Cydney morphed into a wolf and bit Remy without control.  Cydney left Remy and ran in her wolf form.  But, after some time, when she came to her senses, she feels terrible and goes in search of Remy, but, Remy was gone..no trace anywhere.

Cydney was afraid that she had killed the only boy she loved, and started shying away from society.  Her mom takes her back to their place and she never came back again.....until her mom died three years later.  Now, she lives with her aunt, still worried about losing her control and living in guilt for what she had done to Remy (or her Jack).  What she doesn't know a lot.. The boy Cydney bit, is still alive, and is also the King's only son.  And yeah, he was changed to a vampire, in order to save him from dying from her bite.  And one more thing, that hot guy is getting married soon.  A werewolf Cinderella meets vampire prince!  Wait, actually, will they meet?

Now, if you are still not interested to read this novel after this, we won't get along! :)

This land of werewolves, vampires and witches is so great..so normal to read.  I am so very glad that I read this one.  There is no ugly step-sisters here..actually, I liked Cydney's sisters and one little brother in this book.  This, without a doubt, is the most happy and likeable read for me in this month.  The characters are not deep, but this is right for a short novel.  There is humor, adventure, action, romance and the most important of all - 'happily ever after'.  Its a satisfying read!

If you are into fairy-tales or fairy-tale retellings, then you should not wait another second to pick up this book.  I am sure you would enjoy this as much as I do.

ARC Review: Shayla Witherwood: A Half-Faerie Tale by Tamra Torero

Original Title: Shayla Witherwood: A Half-Faerie Tale
Author: Tamra Torero
Publisher: Cedar Fort
Published Date: May 8th 2012
Genre: Young-adult, Fantasy, Paranormal

A brief moment of disappointment washed over me as I approached Jace’s lifeless body. Here I was, about to kiss a boy on the lips for the very first time, and he was completely comatose—possibly paralyzed—and would never even know or remember the experience. This was not how I’d envisioned my first kiss—me invisible, him unconscious.

Shayla Witherwood is not exactly normal. First of all, she’s spent her entire life being homeschooled, traveling in an RV around the country with her grandparents. And second, there’s the kind of inescapable fact that her mom was a genuine faerie.

But now that she’s starting a real life in a regular high school, Shayla desperately needs to stay out of trouble in both worlds because even her faerie powers might not be enough to protect her from what’s coming.

In her latest novel, Tamra Torero spins a magical tale filled with laugh-out-loud sarcasm, surprising twists, and spell-binding romance. Perfect for fairytale fans of all ages, this is one story you won’t want to miss!

REVIEW

Shayla Witherwood is a half-faerie (faerie mother and human father) and her life was simple, until she was moved to public school by her grandmother.  So far she was home-schooled, and she didn't have to worry about her pointy ears or showing any faerie magic by mistake to her online tutor.  Now, things changed when she started making new friends and she is more exposed.  There are some things going on, that Shayla can't control around her..someone is watching her and writing her mysterious notes.  Is that a high school prank or a serious fey world issue?

This book is a light, but not so unique, read!  It doesn't have any great plot or characters..they are all simple.  But, these are characters, that you can around you.  The college incidents were casual and I thank the author for not being dramatic in any of the places.  The romance and friendship was so realistic.  Josi, Shayla's speak-what-you-think friend, is adorable..sometimes, having a best girlfriend is such a cool thing.

If you want a light read, pick it up!   You will have fun!

In Love Beyond Sanity, Eden Roan awoke in a mental hospital, unsure of how she got there. Nearly discovered by a demon, she is rescued by a voice in her mind who saves her life by transforming her figure into something the demon doesn't want to look at.  The voice tells her she is his but that they will never, ever meet.  As time progresses, Eden becomes more and more convinced that the voice is just her imagination playing tricks on her.  It can't possibly be her destined soul mate.
Or can it?

Samuel Quinn was horribly disfigured by the demon when he was a child. He can't stand looking at himself and does not want Eden to see him. Luckily, his powers allow him to hide himself using other people's features as his own.  But when Eden needs him, Samuel will have to step forward to save her even if he can never let her see the real him.

Can there be love without sight? Or will the demon finally have them all just where he wants them?

REVIEW

I wish I had known about this series long before.  I love the world of the Outsiders series so much.

Every outsider has a unique power to save the human race from demons.  Eden Roan is a outsider, with a gift of prophecy.  But, Eden cannot control her gift and passes out every time she gets a vision. Eden was treated as a child or an imbecile by other outsiders.  In addition to this, Eden's soul mate do not wish to meet her, but he speaks to her in her head.  The demon, who is chasing them, is also in her head to make her insane, and he tells her that he has killed her soul mate, when he was 12 years old.  Eden is not so sure about anything anymore, even with the gift of prophecy.

Samuel Quinn was almost killed, when he was 12.  He was burnt inside a locked closet by a demon, but by some miracle he escaped.  But, he lost his normal face and even his parents cannot see his scarred features.  But, being an outsider, Samuel have the power of changing his features to someone else, with a just touch of that person.  So, he hides his scarred face behind the new faces and he is afraid to go near Eden, his soul mate, because of this.

The main plot was amazing.  I didn't read the others in the series, so I took some time to really understand the world for some time.  The story is like to old grandmothers - start with a simple plot and improvise it as you go.  And the author has done just that, improvised a simple plot and she had done that great.  The story of Eden and Samuel is like seeing a dream - their love towards one another is breath-taking.

There are many sub-plots and the older stories re-touched.  Some new ones are quite confusing - like that guy who can see ghosts and in the middle of nowhere, someone appears and says that he is his twin.  But, to say the truth, I clearly enjoyed the whole novel, once I got the hang of what's going on.

An amazing romance and fantasy novel!
