5 STAR ARC Review: Uninvited by Sophie Jordan @SoVerySophie

Uninvited reminded me of "The Darkest Minds" by Alexandra Bracken in many ways.  What will you do, if a book makes you want to stop and keep going at the same time??  Read "Uninvited", you will find out..

Original Title: Uninvited
Series: Uninvited #1
Author: Sophie Jordan
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: January 28th, 2014
Source: Review copy from the publisher, thanks!
Genre: Dystopia, Young adult

The Scarlet Letter meets Minority Report in bestselling author Sophie Jordan's chilling new novel about a teenage girl who is ostracized when her genetic test proves she's destined to become a murderer.

When Davy Hamilton's tests come back positive for Homicidal Tendency Syndrome (HTS)-aka the kill gene-she loses everything. Her boyfriend ditches her, her parents are scared of her, and she can forget about her bright future at Juilliard. Davy doesn't feel any different, but genes don't lie. One day she will kill someone.

Only Sean, a fellow HTS carrier, can relate to her new life. Davy wants to trust him; maybe he's not as dangerous as he seems. Or maybe Davy is just as deadly.

The first in a two-book series, Uninvited tackles intriguing questions about free will, identity, and human nature. Steeped in New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan's trademark mix of gripping action and breathless romance, this suspenseful tale is perfect for fans of James Patterson, Michelle Hodkin, and Lisa McMann.

REVIEW

Davy Hamilton, a girl with everything in her life, whose life is laid out before her in a neat rich manner, is a carrier of HTS - kill gene - meaning she is identified as a future killer.  Everything shatters in Davy's life after that.  Even her boyfriend and her BFF turn against her.  She is expelled out of her school and the government sends her to a different school with other identified carriers in her area.  Sean and Gil, two other carriers in Davy's class, seem okay, but Sean is already imprinted with "H" to state that he has shown evidence of violence.  But, Gil seems to trust Sean and he seems less killer-like than other kids.  When she just thought she could somehow finish the school and leave the place, even this life is snatched away from her...

It's hard to read this book, without feeling your heart squeeze every few minutes.  Davy is trying so hard to convince herself that they had made a mistake in identifying her as a carrier.

I'm different.  The exception.  It's arrogant thinking, but all I can cling to.

Every time, I think, that she can't see worse than this, Sophie Jordan gives pushes Davy deeper.  It's aching to know the girl, who had it all, is just trying to living by hope.  She tries to be confident, tries to find some light in her dark world, where she has no rights for anything.

Whatever happens, I don't have anyone.  I have to learn to live with that.

The only sane person she meets in the school, at first, is Gil, who advises her to be friends with better guys, so that they can protect her.  The guy is so sweet, even I thought the doctors had made a mistake identifying him as a killer.

Hard to imagine he's a carrier.  Maybe he's like me.  Maybe they made a mistake.

What is most astonishing is the reactions of the society, most of all, their own friends and family. I seriously don't know how I would be, if I am in a society like that.  The society, where there is high rate of crime and the government, taking measures to control it, by identifying kill genes - it all seems good..you don't care..you live in your small world minding your own business, thinking that you are safe from all these identified killers... unless the detected person with the kill gene is you or one of your family member.  The author has hit it hard, where it pains.

She makes me sound like livestock.  Not a person.  Not human.

I felt embarassed to even think that in the most desperate situations, I forget to care about the world outside my bubble.  I may not be cruel enough to be like Davy's BFF, but I would have been scared of the carriers too..too scared to even be with them.  That is, as I said, unless if it's me or my little brother or another one of my closest family - then I would know what other innocent carriers are feeling.  While I am kicking myself with all these thoughts, there is the other side - the truly scary killer kind.

RYAN YATES: I told her she should have gone out with me.  That she should have liked me.  And I cut her throat.
DR. WAINWRIGHT: How did you feel then, Ryan?
RYAN YATES: ...Better...

This made me think, maybe it's better if these guys are never let loose in the public.  I was in a total dilemma.

They're carriers.  There doesn't have to be a reason for them to inflict pain on others.

But, you know what won?  The ethical part..  I want to give people a chance.  Maybe if they are properly educated with some values, they would be good.  Hmm?  No, what age are you in?  People don't listen to you and your values, if you tell them.  But, I still don't want innocent people living their life in fear every minute, not knowing how much they have time to be with their family and thrown out to some quarantine.

I walk quickly, as if I'm escaping...as if they might change their minds and pull me back and thrown me into a vehicle and drag me out of here to the detention camp I saw on TV.

It's not like they had a chance that they have this gene.  This is not their choice.  I hate the pain of Davy as she tries to survive with a pack of wolves, waiting to tear her apart even when she shows a little amount of weakness.

The characters, the plot and the world are so amazing, that I can't wait to read the next book and get this over with..in a good way..in a more relieved way.

I am not going to spoil the romance for you.  It's very less, but I love Sean and you will too.  And so is the so little friendship part.  The kids are trying to survive, that they don't have time for anything else..

Recommended for dystopia lovers!  If you are looking for a light read, don't even think about picking this book up.  But, all I can say is, this is going to keep you thinking all the time until the end.  The climax is kind of immediate.  I didn't expect it to be over so soon, but Sophie Jordan is writing another book.  So, I am waiting..  All we have is hope.

4.5 STARS!

REVIEW

At recent times, BDB series has lost its shine to me.  I didn't even try to read BDB #9 and #10.  And then I want to see how Qhuinn and Blay ends up and had gone and bought it.  Well, I am so happy that I am not disappointed and I remembered how all this BDB craze started.  It's all the love for and between the boys that made me stick on to them so much.

This installment is just so good and it has sub-plots that I don't understand (well, I skipped two books, what do I expect..) in the beginning.  But towards the middle, I am so into the story and was so looking forward to the story of the BDB boys than the other new teams.

Another must-read from Ms.Ward!

Next one is about Wrath..and I am not going to miss it for the world.

Although this book was highly hyped about, I started this book with less expectations.  Oh my god, this book is awe-tastic.  This is how a book must be written.  It did perfect justice to its genre.  I kept moving through the pages fast and steady.  The characters and plot are just great.  I liked everything about the book.

Though I was expecting this ending, it is still heartbreaking..

MUST READ and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!  But, if you want some light read or fun book, please don't pick this up.

Review & Giveaway: Sundered by Shannon Mayer

Original Title: Sundered
Series: Nevermore Trilogy #1
Author: Shannon Mayer
Release Date: September 2nd 2011
Source: From Orangeberry book tours
Genre: Dystopian

A miracle drug, Nevermore, spreads like wildfire throughout the world allowing people to eat what they want, no matter how unhealthy it is and yet still lose weight. It is everything the human population has ever dreamed of and Mara is no different. Only a simple twist of fate stops her from taking the drug.

As the weeks roll by, it becomes apparent that Nevermore is not the miracle it claimed. A true to life nightmare, the drug steals the very essence that makes up humanity and unleashes a new and deadly species on the world, a species bent on filling its belly. Locked down within their small farm home, Mara and her husband Sebastian struggle against increasingly bad odds, fighting off marauders and monsters alike.

But Sebastian carries a dark secret, one that more than threatens to tear them apart, it threatens to destroy them both and the love they have for each other.

The secret forces Mara to make the ultimate choice. Will she live for love, or will she live to survive?

REVIEW

Mara and Sebastian are married to each other for four years, with no kids.  Mara loves to have kids, and the miscarriage that happened a year back has made her more dejected.  When a miracle drug called Nevermore, was announced to cure fertility issues and so many other diseases, Mara goes to hospital for getting her shot.  But, as Mara was allergic to the plant from which this drug was created, she was not allowed to take it.  Again dejected from the unfairness, she reaches home and forgets about it.  Sebastian tries to cheer her up by buying a yellow Lab puppy.

After a few weeks of that drug, the drug-injected people became animalistic - man eating man.  And also, they are formed as packs (like one Alpha and others under him).  Mara and Sebastian locks themselves in their home, looking after each other, while the wild humans are waiting outside their gate.  How long are they going to make it like this?  And Sebastian has some bigger and dangerous secret from Mara..

First, for those, who are considering to read this book thinking its a zombie novel, please stop it.  It is not.  But, I am sure you will love it, if you are reading this novel without that expectation.  Second, this is fiction..so, stop thinking - again.  Even after all these warnings, if you are going to 'think', you will dislike this novel and so, don't buy it.  Some novels are not to think..its just to read and enjoy!

This novel started with a slower pace.  The simple, but thrilling plot, makes you read it faster to know what happens next.  The ideas of the zombie-ish pack are good and the secrets in the novel created the feel that the author expected it to.

Mara is a strong heroine and for that, I am glad, because without her, this novel wouldn't have stood a chance.  And Sebastian (do NOT think) is a strong, hot male, who loves his wife so much that he tries to be at her side even when things got worst.  There are other minor characters, which I loved - especially the Lab pup.  I really enjoyed the novel..I did, until I finished the last page.

The only thing I am not able to get is the romance part.  I am a hopeless romantic, but even I know that some things are not under our control.  When you say love can cure a zombie to behave as human, I am definitely NOT going to take it.  But, yeah, as the author has put it in some places, that based on the size of a human, some can take more time to lose their humanity than others.  So, I just hope the next books in the series is more science than fantasy.  (Okay, am I 'thinking' now?)

The novel ends in a cliff-hanger, so that means I am just going to follow the journey of Mara and Sebastian to see what is going to happen. (People have to learn that I hate cliff-hangers, before asking me to read them. ;) )

Thrilling, enjoyable, but ..!  Maybe next time!

Review: Nette by Barbara Rayne

Original Title: Nette
Author: Barbara Rayne
Published Date: March 21st 2012
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Dystopian

In a world where gender was distinguished by the eye color, blue for female and brown for male, she had the misfortune of being born as brown eyed girl. Being ugly and a freak to everyone was the least of her troubles. Immortal and destined to be a queen, her mere existence was a threat to the king. After everyone she loved was brutally murdered, she had no choice but to pursue the path she was destined. In a world that made it obvious there was no place in it for her, immortal Nette will have to make room even if it means killing them all.

REVIEW

In a world around 3010, where men and women are differentiated by their eye colour - brown eyes for men and blue eyes for women.  But, Nette is a girl, who was born with brown eyes and so, her parents hide her from the society fearing how they would treat their baby.  When Nette was 5 years old, she is drowned in a river and they never found out what happened to her.  But, Nette was saved by some light bubbles floating in the air.  Soon, she learns that she is an immortal who cannot die, and she do not need to eat or drink.

After 5 years of surviving in a bubble, one day, Nette is left in front of the villagers by the bubble.  Her grand father identifies her and tells her that she is part of a prophecy, where she kills the cruel king who killed her parents after she drowned.  Nette learns to speak and write, along with military training.  Many of them do not accept her for being different and want to betray her.  Will she survive everything and still kill the King?  Will she be accepted by the society of selfish people, for whom she is willing to give her own life?

After some bad start of the novel, I thought this book is not going to be good.  But, this one really surprised me by bringing out the true qualities of the people.  I just hated the fact that how far people will go for the power and money, due to their selfishness.  Life is so unfair..I.get it.  But, Nette, who does everything for her people's welfare and happiness, only gets betrayal and pain from them, in return.  I loved Nette's will and courage, as much as I loved her patience and innocence.

There is some romance in the novel, that I liked.  The only one person, who trusted and helped her from the start is Prince Raul.  Even there, Nette didn't receive a moment's happiness, due to Raul's evil mother.  If someone in the novel deserves some peace and happiness in their life, it would most definitely be Nette.  I am really glad, that Raul is the real love for her.

I definitely want to give this book 5 stars..yeah, it was that good.  But, I can't, just because of the starting chapters.

Highly recommended for fantasy lovers!

Review: Mockingjay (The Hunger Games #3)

Original Title: Mockingjay
Series: The Hunger Games #3
Author: Suzanne Collins
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Published Date: October 24th 2010
Genre: Science-fiction, Dystopian

Enveloped and toasted with so much sadness and pain, is the book, 'Mockingjay'.  In spite of all odds, Katniss Everdeen enters in the Hunger Games twice and comes out of it alive both times.  If you think it as her luck, then you should read this book.

At the end of the 'Catching Fire', there was a very unfair cliffhanger.  Katniss finds that her district is completely destroyed, and Peeta is taken by the Capitol to be tortured.  Katniss is brought to District 13, which was considered as destroyed.  In District 13, Katniss is expected to be Mockingjay, the symbol of revolution.  But all Katniss could do is to think of a way to be out of insanity.  Well, who can blame her!  I just felt that way myself.  On to the story.. District 13 forms a plan and starts a revolution to overthrow Capitol, keeping Katniss as a piece of their game, again.

When I finished the book, I didn't feel happy or glad..only heaviness and disappointment.  No matter what happens in the future of the book, there could never be a completeness or peaceful night's sleep in Katniss' life.  The series is an ultimate success and most of us felt it, than knowing it.  But, I just thought there are so many deaths and even the final decision of Katniss, while choosing between Peeta and Gale, is not happier.  It felt like another survival need.

No hope or optimism in the book.  The main goal for the revolution falls, when they won.  I know the author has made it realistic..but if tearing apart your heart is realistic, I think I can live without it.

Closed the book with a heavy sad sigh!

Some favorite quotes:

“You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real.”

“It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”

“Fire is catching! And if we burn, you burn with us!”

“Some walks you have to take alone.”

“I knew you'd kiss me."
"How?" I say. Because I didn't know myself.
"Because I am in pain," He say's. "That's the only way I get your attention.”

“Is that why you hate me?" I ask.
"Partly," She admits. "Jealousy is certainly involved. I also think you're a little hard to swallow. With your tacky romantic drama and your defender-of-the-helpless act. Only it isn't an act, which makes you more unbearable. Please feel free to take this personally.”

Review: Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2)

Original Title: Catching Fire
Series: The Hunger Games #2
Author: Suzanne Collins
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Published Date: September 1st 2009
Genre: Dystopian, Young-adult, Science-fiction

I finished this book 24 hours before and from that moment, I keep thinking the same - "What is it with this author?  Why is she sooooo.. Oh! Forget it!".  Seriously!  What is it with this author and writing!  I am mad, when I finished this book.  All the time, I keep praying for the characters in the book and then THE WORST CLIFFHANGER EVER!

For those of you, who are hearing about this book/series for the first time, please see the The Hunger Games #1 review, before reading this.

Katniss Everdean and Peeta Mellark, after coming alive from the 74th Hunger Games, did not feel happy or safe with the winnings.  The aftermath of the Hunger Games seems to torture them even in their dreams.  Katniss begins settling into her new life as victor, where she never has to hunt or work for food and she has more money, than everyone else in her District.  Katniss is unsure of how she is feeling towards Peeta and Gale (her friend from childhood), while both Peeta and Gale are in love with her.

But what Katniss doesn't know is, there is a rebellion starting against the Capitol, keeping Katniss as their symbol. This news comes through the President Snow, who threatens her that if she fails to convince the people that all she had done in the arena is due to love and not to evade the Capitol, then her whole district will be destroyed.  While she decides on how to go about all this, she finds two women, who say they are headed for District 13, which the Government claims to have destroyed.

Katniss convinces herself that the information about District 13 must not be true and she starts thinking of running away from District 12 to save her family from the President.   But, before she can take another step towards it, the Government announces Quarter Quell - the celebration of the 75 years of Hunger Games, where every District has to offer two of their previous tributes (one male and one female) for the 75th Hunger Games - and Katniss finds herself entering again into the worst place again, to save Peeta this time, instead of her.  Again, THE 75th HUNGER GAMES begins and the adventure rolls.

Katniss, the girl on fire, is actually on fire, this time.  I like Katniss, who always concentrates on the problem at hand, rather than mulling around her unfortunate circumstances or discomforts, even when there is utter hopelessness.  Both outside or inside the arena, there is a knife point always hanging over her head.

The plot and storytelling are so powerful, that I felt myself pulled inside the book.  The arena and all the dangerous stuff that the people face there, are both scary and spell-binding.  No way would I have guessed any of it.  The feeling of sadness towards the second half of the book is so high, because of the losses and sacrifices that takes place.  Well, there is always a huge cost, when revolution begins.  At the cliffhanger at the end of the book, I completely lost it.  I would have thrown the book and hunted for Suzanne Collins for such unfairness, but then I remembered the third book is already out and calmed down.  Starting with it..immediately!

Another best from Suzanne Collins!  A must read!  A 5+ star book, again!

“We had to save you because you're the mockingjay, Katniss," says Plutarch. "While you live, the revolution lives.”
