Review & Giveaway: Sundered by Shannon Mayer

Original Title: Sundered
Series: Nevermore Trilogy #1
Author: Shannon Mayer
Release Date: September 2nd 2011

Genre: Dystopian

A miracle drug, Nevermore, spreads like wildfire throughout the world allowing people to eat what they want, no matter how unhealthy it is and yet still lose weight. It is everything the human population has ever dreamed of and Mara is no different. Only a simple twist of fate stops her from taking the drug.

As the weeks roll by, it becomes apparent that Nevermore is not the miracle it claimed. A true to life nightmare, the drug steals the very essence that makes up humanity and unleashes a new and deadly species on the world, a species bent on filling its belly. Locked down within their small farm home, Mara and her husband Sebastian struggle against increasingly bad odds, fighting off marauders and monsters alike.

But Sebastian carries a dark secret, one that more than threatens to tear them apart, it threatens to destroy them both and the love they have for each other.

The secret forces Mara to make the ultimate choice. Will she live for love, or will she live to survive?

Mara and Sebastian are married to each other for four years, with no kids.  Mara loves to have kids, and the miscarriage that happened a year back has made her more dejected.  When a miracle drug called Nevermore, was announced to cure fertility issues and so many other diseases, Mara goes to hospital for getting her shot.  But, as Mara was allergic to the plant from which this drug was created, she was not allowed to take it.  Again dejected from the unfairness, she reaches home and forgets about it.  Sebastian tries to cheer her up by buying a yellow Lab puppy.

After a few weeks of that drug, the drug-injected people became animalistic - man eating man.  And also, they are formed as packs (like one Alpha and others under him).  Mara and Sebastian locks themselves in their home, looking after each other, while the wild humans are waiting outside their gate.  How long are they going to make it like this?  And Sebastian has some bigger and dangerous secret from Mara..

First, for those, who are considering to read this book thinking its a zombie novel, please stop it.  It is not.  But, I am sure you will love it, if you are reading this novel without that expectation.  Second, this is fiction..so, stop thinking - again.  Even after all these warnings, if you are going to 'think', you will dislike this novel and so, don't buy it.  Some novels are not to think..its just to read and enjoy!

This novel started with a slower pace.  The simple, but thrilling plot, makes you read it faster to know what happens next.  The ideas of the zombie-ish pack are good and the secrets in the novel created the feel that the author expected it to.

Mara is a strong heroine and for that, I am glad, because without her, this novel wouldn't have stood a chance.  And Sebastian (do NOT think) is a strong, hot male, who loves his wife so much that he tries to be at her side even when things got worst.  There are other minor characters, which I loved - especially the Lab pup.  I really enjoyed the novel..I did, until I finished the last page.

The only thing I am not able to get is the romance part.  I am a hopeless romantic, but even I know that some things are not under our control.  When you say love can cure a zombie to behave as human, I am definitely NOT going to take it.  But, yeah, as the author has put it in some places, that based on the size of a human, some can take more time to lose their humanity than others.  So, I just hope the next books in the series is more science than fantasy.  (Okay, am I 'thinking' now?)

The novel ends in a cliff-hanger, so that means I am just going to follow the journey of Mara and Sebastian to see what is going to happen. (People have to learn that I hate cliff-hangers, before asking me to read them. ;) )

Thrilling, enjoyable, but ..!  Maybe next time!
