ARC Review: Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown

Original Title: Lies Beneath
Series: Lies Beneath #1
Author: Anne Greenwood Brown
Publisher: Delacorte Books
Release Date: June 12th 2012
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

The lore of mermaids and mermen is real. Just wait until you meet Calder White in this addictive debut novel that is destined to make a splash!

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters must prey on humans and absorb their positive energy. Usually they select their victims at random, but this time around the underwater clan chooses its target for a reason: revenge. They want to kill Jason Hancock, the man they blame for their mother's death.

It's going to take the whole White family to lure the aquaphobic Hancock onto the water. Calder's job is to gain Hancock's trust by getting close to his family. Relying on his irresistible good looks and charm, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter Lily. Easy enough, but Calder screws everything up by falling in love—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined, and just as the mermaids threaten to take matters into their own hands, forcing Calder to choose between family and the girl he loves. One thing's for sure, whatever Calder decides, the outcome won't be pretty.

REVIEW

*** Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Children's Books for providing the review copy. ***

If I hadn't finished this book and gave up somewhere in the middle, I would definitely have said it plain sucked.  But now, all I am saying is the plot is amazing!

Calder White - One deadly, lonely and very handsome merman, who hates to be deadly!

Three beautiful and treacherous step-sisters - Maris, Pavati and Tallulah!

Although Calder doesn't like to be near their heartless sisters, they unite under a common goal: revenge for their mother's death.

They were searching for one man all their life, ever since their mother's death.  Calder has made a deal with his sisters, that he should be made free from his family, once he helped them kill that man.  That man - Jason Hancock - comes and settles along with his family near their lake.  What a luck!

But, Calder might just have fallen for Jason's eldest daughter, Lily.

Will Calder kill Jason, when he knows that it will eventually kill Lily?  But, his freedom from the family, which he craved all these years is in the loop.

The author sure knows how to weave a tale of amazing twists and surprises.  The dialogues were great.  The world building is not so good, but its acceptable.  The characters of Lily, Calder, Sophie and Gabrielle were endearing.

I have one major complaint though.  Why the terrible start?  It made me sleep for the first 30% of the pages.  Not all the readers will have the patience to cross them and enjoy the remaining.  If someone could seriously consider changing the starting chapters, it would be great!

Except those initial struggles at not sleeping with Kindle in my hand and falling over from my desk, this book is really amazing!  Okay, that doesn't come right.  But, believe me when I say that towards the end, I was satisfied with the plot and the ending.

I really enjoyed it!  And definitely will go for more in this series.
