Genre: Contemporary Romance
Adam and Christy have been best friends since kindergarten. Always the perpetual outsiders in their small town in Texas, they’ve always had to deal with nasty comments from their classmates. Adam is called “gay” while Christy is called “witch.”On both counts the bullies are right.
Their junior year in high school seems destined to be the same old same old until Christy decides to cast a love spell for Adam at the midnight hour. The next day an alluring and mysterious new boy enrolls at school and sets hearts a flutter, including Adam’s. Meanwhile, Christy’s mad crush on the handsome Ian seems to be going nowhere fast. Struggling to capture the heart of Ian while trying to come into her full witch powers is tough enough, but when a great evil arrives in town that threatens everything they hold dear, she realizes that finding a boyfriend is the least of her and Adam’s worries.
Soon Adam, Christy, their potential love interests, and their good friends Drifter and Olivia, will have to battle a force of darkness that has killed in their town before and will again.
My Favorite Christmas Movie
- Guest Post by Rhiannon Frater
I love Christmas with its unique holiday culture that includes food, songs, rituals, decorations, television specials, and films. Over the years I have gleaned my own favorites from the bevy of options to create my very own Christmas traditions. My hubby and I watch Bad(der) Santa every year the night before family arrives, I make a spice cake for desert at Christmas dinner, and I always make sure to have a spider ornament in the Christmas tree for luck. But the one thing I look forward to every year (other than the nieces and nephews arriving), is decorating the tree while watching The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The Nightmare Before Christmas holds a special place in my heart. Though it wasn’t a huge success when it came out 25 years ago, it’s slowly gained in popularity over the years. When it was first in the theaters, I went to see it with my youngest brother one cold winter night and we were the only ones in the audience. It was a visually stunning film, but also one with so much heart it reduced me to tears a few times. When it was re-released in 3D a few years ago, my husband and I made sure to catch one of the screenings. Over the years, I’ve been very happy to see it grow in popularity as new generations embrace Jack Skellington, Sally, Zero, and Halloween Town.
As a Goth girl (for over twenty years), Jack’s my kindred spirit. His journey throughout the movie reminds me of my own. In the beginning, he’s restless in his own skin, questioning the things around him, and seeking what will make him truly happy. What makes this particular movie such a great Christmas movie is that by the end Jack realizes that his place is among those like him (his friends and family), who love and care for him because of who he is. He doesn’t have to change himself into Sandy Claws (hehehehe) to find love and acceptance.
Though Christmas means many different things to many different people, for me it has always been a time of peaceful respite from the world. It’s wondrous to be surrounded by those I love and who love me. That is why I love The Nightmare Before Christmas so very much. It’s a reminder that home is where love is.
