IPod Touch Giveaway & Interview with K. Reed!

Original Title: Dark Inheritance: Fallen Empire
Series: Fallen Empire #1
Author: K. Reed
Release Date: May 8th 2012
Genre: Historical Regency

The once glittering ballrooms of Regency England now lay desolate. A plague has ravaged the countryside. The government has fallen. What vestiges of order remained have been consumed by the endless funeral pyres.

Grayson, once the Baron of Harwich, sought only to protect his people. Rescuing a half-dead woman was not among his plans. But something about her pulled at him. Perhaps it was her beauty, still evident beneath the pallor of loss. Perhaps it was the recently fired rifle at her side. Or maybe he was simply tried of death. All he knew was that the plague had taken too much already. He couldn’t let it take her as well.

Lady Juliette Adair had been ready to die with her brother. She didn't expect to be shown mercy in a world that had no room for mercy. When Grayson saved her she questioned his motives but soon found herself intrigued by him, drawn to him.

Societal rules were a thing of the past, dead along with the ton. Juliette had no manner by which to measure her growing closeness to Grayson any longer. But when she discovers he may not be the man she thought she knew more is at stake than just her heart. The secrets she carries could make a king or destroy one.

EXCERPT

“How do you survive if you gather every beggar you find?” she wondered softly.

Grayson took a step closer and, even if he didn’t know himself why he insisted on taking her back to Harwich, answered honestly. “I’ve never taken one before now.”

Shaking her head, Juliette glanced to her brother. “Do not start with me, then. I should be here.” She gestured to the body. “By his side.”

When her eyes met his again, he saw it. Despite her weakness, her delicate state, strength sparked in her blue eyes. Unbidden, fury flashed through him at her words, at a sentiment that contrasted with the look in her eyes.

He’d given his men strict instructions. No matter what they saw, how many begged for mercy, they were to perform their duties—find supplies to help their village, their people.  Never had they disobeyed him.

Today marked the first time his commands had been broken. And it was he who had broken them. Instinct, an unnamed feeling, wouldn’t allow him to leave her behind. Grayson was drawn to her, wanted her. Juliette touched a part of him he’d thought long abandoned.

Leaning closer, Grayson said clearly, “I have no interest in your absolution.”

INTERVIEW WITH K. REED

1.  Is there an inspiration behind why you chose writing?
I’m sure you’ve heard (read) this before but it’s true. Writing has always been a part of me and I’ve always wanted to do it.

2.  When you were little, what did you want to be when you "grew up"?
Either Wonder Woman or the President of the United States. Both have awesome powers, cool planes, historic homes, and everyone knows who they are.

3.  Finish the sentence- one book I wish I had written is....
Harry Potter. Because really, why not?

4.  What are your current literary works?  Any sneak peaks?
Besides Dark Inheritance: Fallen Empire, I’m currently plotting a trilogy set in the late Victorian era (1880s or such). I’ve read lots of Victorian era books and have seen not quite as many movies, the most famous is Sherlock Holmes of course, but my approach to this trilogy is slightly different.

For some odd reason, Victorian detectives take huge leaps in logic to solve a crime. I’m taking a different approach to make it harder and grittier for my couple. Brace yourselves—my couple may actually be wrong on occasion! There’s nothing I dislike more than a detective that’s always right on the first try every time. No one is really Sherlock Holmes. The ramifications of my couple being wrong will dog them during the story.

5.  If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
The past, not that I’d want to live there. Too used to (addicted to?) modern technology. But for research purposes only. I’d interview little old ladies having tea and lovers hiding behind bushes. They’d call me The Mad Foreigner!

6.  If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Aphrodite, the goddess of love. I’d be loved and adored, have lots of sex, and let’s face it—it’d be lots of fun!

7.  Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
How many dystopian Regency romances have you heard of?

8.  Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
That first royalty check. I know, shallow, but it’s true. It was really cool to see that in the mail!

9.  What's one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Either persevere until you’re published, or read The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman

10.  If you could jump in to a book, and live in that world, which would it be?
Um…I know characters I’d like to see in mine. And I know characters I’d like to jump. As for living in their world? Not really. For all its problems, I like this world. However, Star Trek: The Next Generation is cool! Except not on a ship…well not permanently even if they do get to explore strange new worlds.

11.  If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be?
Two Sides of the Same Coin

12.  What is your favorite scene in the book and why do you love it?
The scene where Juliette realizes how much she loves Grayson. I can’t help it, I’m a hopeless romantic and it’s a very sweet scene!

13.  What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you'd be embarrassed to admit?
I’ve watched Star Trek, Buffy, NCIS, I’ve read Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, Hunger Games, romances ranging from sweet to uber sexy, and I’m not embarrassed by any of them.

14.  What is one book everyone should read?
Dark Inheritance: Fallen Empire. No? Baring my own book, I can’t really say. Books I enjoy and recommend aren’t necessarily received well by others. I actually liked Anna Karenina! I may be the only one…

Okay, how about Pride & Prejudice? Not the zombie one, though that was pretty interesting, just lacking in actual zombies.

15.  One food you would never eat?
SNAILS! Ugh, just thinking about them make my skin crawl.

QUICK ANSWERS

Favorite place?
The beach. Hands down.

Best Christmas present?
It’s a tie between the seesaw my grandfather and dad made and the Barbie dream house.

Favorite book?
I can’t say I have one. I’ve enjoyed many, many books, I probably read 5-7 books a month so it’s hard to say. Anything by Agatha Christie or Jane Austen.

Favorite author?
See above

  Favorite smell?
Roses

   Favorite series?
Currently? NCIS. This will change mind you! Hawaii Five-O is creeping up there, but without that idiotic blonde I refuse to learn the name of!

Nickname?
Belle

Favorite writing spot?
Tranquil writing cottage with a beautiful no-maintenance pond, butterfly garden, fields of waving grain, no allergies and no tornadoes. Yes. I’ve invented this in my mind. It’s my happy place!

Favorite movie?
Right at this second, Thor. And certainly not because of the riveting plot! See that pict of Chris Hemsworth here? Yeah…yum.

  Favorite dish?
Pizza. A writer’s best friend

  Favorite color?
Red

Favorite quote?

Favorite flavor of ice cream?
Vanilla--you can put chocolate sauce, hot caramel, and whatever else you want on it to spice it up without taking away the flavor of either the ice cream or the toppings.

Your best trait?
Generous with others. Sometimes to a fault.

Your worst trait?
Very critical of myself, which in turn becomes critical of others who aren’t meeting my standard. Not fair at all, I agree. I’m working on it!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Romance author with an historical twist.

Too many post-apocalyptic stories, movies, and what-ifs crowded her head, and K Reed decided to do something about it. So she plotted one out, decided an historical post-apocalyptic romance was the way to go, and wrote that one instead.

A lover of all things historical, of strong heroes with equally strong heroines, and of sexy pirates, she’s going to explore the post-apocalyptic world of plague-ridden 1804 and the gritty criminal element of Victorian England.

Luckily she has an understanding family, supportive friends, and a day job that offers her the flexibility she needs to plot, plan, and write. Sure, one day she’d like to travel the country in search of fantastic storylines and great locale pictures, but for now she’ll stick to the east coast and the internet.

    1. The first five pages is great for the beginning writer. It points out a lot of common writing mistakes and really helps you polish your manuscript for an editor to see.

  15. Thanks for having me today! I agree, we all need music in a post-apocalyptic world.

Hawaii Five-O...yeah. I admit he's hot (definitely) but I think Dano steals the show with his sarcasm and witty one-liners. But then I'm a sucker for one-liners!

  18. Yeah, I'd love to have written Harry Potter too. It's just wonderful and who wouldn't want to be the author who wrote something that SO many people love?! Oh, and Chris Hemsworth really is a cutie. I'm more into Tom Hiddleston right now though...he plays Loki. :)
